South Africa’s economy continues to face challenges, including slow growth, high unemployment and pressure on important services such as electricity, transport and water. New infrastructure projects are, therefore, important as they can help improve services, support businesses, create jobs and attract investment.

Creamer Media’s ‘Projects in Progress 2026’ report provides an overview of some of the major infrastructure and mining projects under way in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa.

The report includes the Cape Winelands Airport project, as well as several renewable-energy projects. These include projects selected under Bid Windows 5 and 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, the Sasol and Air Liquide large-scale renewable-energy project, and several wind, solar and battery projects.

Important water projects covered include Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and the Moretele North bulk water supply scheme. These projects are intended to improve water supply and help meet growing demand.

The mining section covers projects involving gold, platinum group metals, copper, titanium, rare earths and high-purity manganese sulphate. These include new mines, mine expansions, projects to extend the operating lives of existing mines, and projects that recover minerals from old mine waste. The report also includes select mining projects in Central and Southern Africa.

Together, these projects show where investment is taking place and offer a window  into new infrastructure and mining developments that support economic activity in South Africa and the broader African region.

This report summarises information published in Engineering News & Mining Weekly, together with information available in the public domain over the past 12 months. It does not purport to provide an analysis of market trends.

The information in this report is correct as of May 2026.
